Africa and Abandoned Theme Park Assignment

Africa

1. When I read through the article, "Awaiting Animals: Casting East African Wildlife 'In a State of Being", I was amazed at how much work Nick Brandt put into this project. He really captured the beauty of the different animals, and risked his life taking photos of others. In his photos, I liked how the subject was in the middle of the frame, and if there were multiple subjects, they were evenly in place.

3. This picture is my personal favorite because it is very balanced, clear, and edited beautifully.

4. One of the rules of photography present in this assignment is balance because the elephant is perfectly centered, and the land and sky in the background are fairly calm.

5. Nick Brandt uses a Pentax 67II with two fixed lenses, that don't zoom in. He used lenses that don't zoom to get a portrait of the animal, instead of zooming.

6. He took those pictures because he is showing the animals state of being. He is showing the animals in their states of being to show people what they are poaching, for awareness.

7. He hopes that people will not kill these animals, and let them live in their natural habitat.

8.  "There is also something deeply, emotionally stirring and affecting about the plains of Africa—those vast, green rolling plains punctuated by graphically perfect acacia trees under the huge skies."

Abandoned Theme Parks

1. I would like to visit Okpo Land, in Geoje Island South Korea and Gulliver's Kingdom in Japan. I want to take pictures at Okpo Land because of the odd history of the park. The two deaths on the duck themed ride and the anonymous owner really interest me. I'd like to visit and take photos at Gulliver's Kingdom in Japan because it is right next to the suicide forest, the most haunted place in the world, and the doomsday cult.

3.
a) Eastern State Penitentiary, Pennsylvania, United States.
b) Waverly Hills Sanitorium, Kentucky, United States.
c) Island of the Dolls, Xochimilco, Mexico.
d) Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh Scotland.
e) The Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood California, United States.

4. The Waverly Hills Sanitorium was used for patients who had tuberculosis during the 1900's, very few survived and walked out the doors. The majority of people there died, and when they died they were thrown down the body chute. The epidemic slowed down in the 1930's, they closed the Sanitorium for a year. It was reopened, and terrible treatments were used there, such as electroshock therapy.

5. I think it would be fun to go there and take pictures because it will show how awful American doctors treated the mentally and physically ill. I would want to take photos of the body chute, and the different rooms throughout the Sanitorium.

6. I would have to fly to Louisville, Kentucky, book a hotel, bring multiple people, cameras, lenses, and a tripod. If the place is private property, then I would just have to sneak in, or get a permit.
